The gallery forests, wooded savannahs and wetlands of northern Benin are crucial to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They are threatened by deforestation, extensive agriculture, uncontrolled bushfires and over-exploitation.
Conservation cannot succeed without the communities living alongside these ecosystems: they are the ones who monitor sites, replant, and adopt — or not — compatible practices.
Objective
Strengthen the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources by involving communities in ecological restoration, site monitoring and the adoption of sustainable farming and forestry practices.
What we did
Communities, farmers and herders sensitised to conservation and to practices limiting soil degradation.
Planting of native species in critical zones and follow-up of planted sites.
Good practices in sustainable soil, forest and natural resource management.
Monitoring system and village environmental surveillance committees set up and operational.
Strengthening associations involved in natural resource management.
Results
Local monitoring committees installed and functional; improved vegetation cover observed on reforested sites.

Maintain the reforested sites
Seedlings need care through three dry seasons to establish. That follow-up is still unfunded.
